The watch later playlist is a default playlist on YT that has the intention to work as a place you can send videos that you want to watch at a later date. Usually it ends up being useless because you forget to watch the stuff on there, and the algorithm keeps pushing more videos for you to watch. I think at one point I ended up with something like 2500 videos or more on that playlist, which pretty much made the point of it useless. So starting this year, I decided to purge and clean up that playlist the best I can.
I think it is interesting to see all the videos that past lug saved, I can tell pretty much that my taste in videos certainly has changed. I first started deleting videos that I didn’t gave a shit about, later I moved on to deleting videos where I asked myself: do you really care enough to watch this? That helped with further cutting down the list number. Eventually, 2500 videos turned into 1200 videos, and with more cleaning, I ended up down to a smaller 800 videos. The watch later playlist was later exported and reimported to Freetube.
Now that the playlist has gotten down to this size, it has become consistently harder to get the number down. On a good day where I had nothing else planned, I could probably knock down 20 videos in a day. However, this is not a very often thing, and eventually, new videos from my subscription feed show up and I end up adding them to the list, to some day watch it or something. It doesn’t help that I have gotten more and more into watching longer form videos, and now the playlist has big 30 minute to 1 hour videos just sitting there. And trying to binge those kinds of videos can be (and are) very exhausting. I swear that the watch later playlist is pretty much useless when you have so many stuff to watch. Maybe one day I will finally get the list to zero. Or this will be a case of a Sisyphean never ending task.
